💬 Group Safety Plan: Discreet Signals & Prep

These codes must be agreed upon before your night out. They provide a non-confrontational way to signal immediate danger or discomfort to your friends or venue staff.

1. 🚨 Venue Code (Staff Help)

  1. Code: "Ask for Angela"
  2. Action: Say this phrase to any member of staff (bartender, security, etc.) if you feel unsafe, harassed, or threatened.
  3. Result: Staff are trained to discreetly help you get away safely, such as calling a licensed taxi or reuniting you with friends.

2. 🛑 Group Safe Word (Immediate Danger)

  1. Code: Choose a unique, random word (e.g., "Mustard" or "Octopus").
  2. Action: If anyone says this word, it means "DROP EVERYTHING AND LEAVE NOW."
  3. Result: No questions asked. The entire group stops what they are doing and leaves the area immediately as a unit.

3. 👀 Group Check-In Phrase (Need Intervention)

  1. Code: Choose a distinct, innocent phrase (e.g., "I think I left the stove on").
  2. Action: Use this phrase when speaking to a friend if you are uncomfortable with the situation or person you are with.
  3. Result: Your friend knows to come over and subtly interrupt, giving you an excuse to walk away.

📱 Digital Safety & Gear Checklist

Purpose: Preparation is the best defense. Complete this list before leaving the house.

  1. Live Location Tracking: Activate sharing (Find My / Google Maps) with a trusted friend/family member NOT on the night out.
  2. Power & Battery: Ensure phone is 100% charged. Bring a portable power bank—a dead battery is a safety hazard.
  3. Financial Security: Know how to freeze your bank card instantly via your app in case of theft.
  4. Emergency Contact: Save a "safe person" as your ICE (In Case of Emergency) contact on your lock screen.

🚖 Safe Transport: Taxi Checks

Purpose: Never get into an unlicensed vehicle. It is uninsured and dangerous. Perform these 3 visual checks before entering.

1. The "Roof Light" Rule

  1. Check: Is the yellow TAXI light on the roof ON?
  2. Rule: If YES, you can flag it down. If NO (or no light exists), it is a Private Hire car. You MUST pre-book these via app/phone. Never get into a Private Hire car off the street.

2. The Plate Check (Rear Bumper)

  1. Check: Look at the back of the car before opening the door.
  2. Rule: It must display a plastic Council License Plate showing the license number and passenger capacity. No plate = No ride.

3. The Driver ID (Interior)

  1. Check: Once the door is open, look for the driver's ID badge (on the dash or hanging from the mirror).
  2. Rule: It must show their photo and license number. If you can't see it, ask to see it. A real driver will never refuse.

⚠️ RED FLAGS:

  1. Driver tries to negotiate a cash price before you get in (meter should always be used in the city).
  2. Driver claims the "meter is broken."
  3. Driver approaches you on the street offering a ride.

📍 Peace of Mind on Your Night Out

When you're enjoying the vibrant nightlife in Inverness, your safety is paramount. Give your friends and family true peace of mind by using Google Maps' real-time Location Sharing feature.

A simple tap ensures a trusted person always knows your whereabouts, making your journey home safer and your night worry-free. It’s quick, private, and the smartest way to look out for each other.

How to Share Your Location via Google Maps

Follow these quick steps to share your live location with a friend or family member before you head out or as you leave a venue:

  1. Open the Google Maps App on your phone (iOS or Android).
  2. Tap your Profile Picture (or initial) in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Select Location Sharing from the menu.
  4. Tap the large blue Share location button.
  5. Set the Duration: Choose for How long you want to share your location. For a night out, we recommend selecting "Until you turn this off" or selecting a timeframe (e.g., 6 hours) that covers your journey home.
  6. Select Your Contact: Choose the trusted person(s) you wish to share with from your contact list.
  7. Tap Share.

The selected contact will instantly receive a link allowing them to see your real-time location on their own map, ensuring you are never alone on your way home.

Remember: You can stop sharing at any time by returning to the Location Sharing menu and tapping Stop
